Greenhouse gas concentrations are at an all-time high!

Sweden+Taiwan Green Transition Alliance has been launched to support Taiwan achieve 2050 Net Zero Target

Global greenhouse gas concentrations have continued to reach new highs in recent years and temperature increases will far exceed the 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius that countries have promised in the past under the Paris Agreement. This will leave all countries exposed to more extreme weather events such as droughts, heatwaves, and typhoons that can be increasingly seen already today. Thus, the "Green Transition" has become an even more important and urgent issue, that everyone from enterprises to governments need to address to stem the rise in greenhouse gas concentrations and rising temperatures, happening right before our eyes.

The Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI), is an important index of countries' carbon reduction processes and in its 2021 latest annual published report Sweden was selected as a successful model country from both policy and economic aspects. Ever since it was introduced in 1991, Sweden has had the highest carbon tax in the world (USD 137 per ton) and it has contributed to reduce Sweden's carbon emissions by 29% since then; while still growing GDP by 84% thanks to the industrial transformation. This shows that the green transformation is not only positive for the environment but can also contribute more innovation and industrial development in the economy. \n Such a remarkable achievement would not be possible without the sustained excellence and technological prowess of our companies, and Business Sweden is proud to have our eight companies Assa Abloy, Atlas Copco, Baseload Power, Ericsson, Scania, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, Volvo Cars, and Taiwan Volvo Group join us to support Taiwan's green transition and launch the \n\nSweden+ Taiwan Green Transition Alliance. In the pledge ceremony, each company present concrete pledges to reduce its environmental and carbon footprint to support Taiwan's goal of green growth and net zero by 2050. \n\nBy joining forces with the Taiwanese industry, we build a strong foundation for co-creating a sustainable future, while strengthening the industry ecosystem in both markets.

Hong Shen-han, a Taiwanese legislator said:

“In addition to actively achieving the 2050 net zero target, we would also like to leverage on our industrial advantages and cooperate with international partners on new technologies, new energy sources and innovative business models to make the greatest contribution to climate actions".

Taiwan and Sweden team up to build a green industrial future

Under the wave of green transition, more and more governments and enterprises realize that net zero is vital to the economy and competitiveness of the industries. "We know we won’t get near to the net zero target without the private sector. There are 22 industries in Sweden and more than 500+ Swedish companies join the Fossil Free Sweden initiative and develop their roadmaps to contribute to the Sweden’s 2045 net zero target ." said Amb. Ekholm, Ambassador for Sustainable Enterprise Development of the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Our eight innovative companies in the Sweden+Taiwan Green Transition Alliance, Assa Abloy, Atlas Copco, Baseload Power, Ericsson, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, Volvo Cars, and Taiwan Volvo Group, cover manufacturing, energy, telecommunications, transportation, and security and have moreover set clear goals to reduce their carbon emissions by 20%-50% by 2030 and even to achieve carbon neutrality (Sweden's eight companies pledges: please refer to Annex I).

The Swedish Representative Mr. Bengt G Carlsson said:

"The green transition in Taiwan opens vast business opportunities and the industrial sector can boost its competitiveness by taking a frontline role “

To support Taiwan achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050 or earlier, the Sweden+Taiwan Green Transition Alliance will implement four major initiatives:

  1. Take action - Assess environmental risks and opportunities and work to support Taiwan's progress towards sustainability and carbon neutrality and society
  2. Co-create - Identify barriers to driving sustainable development and implementing innovative solutions in key areas and identify common approaches
  3. Raising ambition - Encourage courageous action to bring Taiwan's goal of becoming a carbon-neutral economy ahead of schedule by 2050
  4. Raising awareness - Use Sweden's green sustainable growth experience, industry carbon neutrality endeavor, and competitiveness roadmap to raise awareness of green sustainable growth opportunities

The Swedish Trade and Invest Council together with the eight partner companies would once again like to emphasize the necessity of collaboration and co-creation across industries and government. We would like to welcome you to join us to Pioneer the Possible.
